2021's MOST WORN FASHION TRENDS

What's trending on and off the runway.

Without a doubt, 2021 has not been what we hoped a new year would be. After the events of 2020, we, as a society, thought we would be vaccinated and getting back to our "normal" lives. We looked forward to shopping, eating out, going to concerts and hitting up the clubs in the latest and trendiest apparel. However, despite the ongoing pandemic, the fashion industry has worked tirelessly to prevail, and this spring the runways saw a vast array of fabulous fashion trends. 

It is certainly true that the fashion industry never fails to give us eye-catching and innovative new styles for us fashion lovers to also try. Currently, spring has begun and flowers are blooming, which can only mean one thing. Spring 2021 fashion styles are starting to appear from the posts of Instagram fashion bloggers and onto our city streets. 

This March the three most worn Spring fashion trends of 2021 are the ever-popular monochrome trend, the return of baggy jeans and the rise of stylish sweatpants. 

Monochrome Magic

The monochrome trend is in no way a new trend to the fashion world, but with the depressing year that we had in 2020, it is without a doubt that bold colours are key for this year's monochromatic styles. For years the monochrome trend has been about pairing all black and white pieces together to form a unified and classy outfit. In January 2021, the U.S. presidential inauguration showed us flourishing examples of the new and improved monochrome trend with outfits of deep red, sky blue, violet, rose pink and creamy neutrals, such as those worn by former First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and her granddaughters.

Undoubtedly, wearing one harmonious coloured outfit can portray the appearance of power. Consequently, Chanel has been one of the leaders in the monochrome trend, as can be seen through the careful designs of the ever-evolving Chanel suit.

The pink monochrome Chanel suit, from the Cruise 2020/21 collection, is an example how monochrome does not have to be one uniform shade. You can totally mix different shades of the same colour. Likewise, you can also mix and match different types of fabrics and textures, and add subtle pops of differentiating colours or neutrals through the addition of accessories. The monochrome trend is outstandingly versatile. You can choose to wear an all-red outfit and tone it down with the addition of a black belt, handbag, or even shoes. You can even choose to wear an all-white outfit and add a pop of colour like hot pink with the addition of a handbag, or accent the outfit with some chunky, gold jewelry. In the end, the way to style the monochrome look is up to the choices of the wearer.

Baggy Denim

A blast from the past, your mom wore them, and now, we, Gen Z are wearing them. What are they you ask? Baggy jeans! Our beloved skinny jeans are not going anywhere, but we are making room for new denim friends in our closet. There is no doubt about it, Covid has brought back the desire for comfortable, wide-legged jeans, that are still trendy and stylish.

Mom jeans, dad jeans, boyfriend jeans, and even skater jeans all qualifiy for the baggy denim trend. Baggy jeans allow any look to feel and appear relaxed. Baggy jeans are becoming a classic staple in everyone's closet this spring, as they can be paired with almost anything. For example, they can be dressed up with the addition of a fancy blouse, jewelry and your favourite pair of heels, or dressed down with a tucked-in tee and some sporty kicks.

Sweatpants 

Sweatpants used to be the pants you would pull on after a long and tiring day of work to lounge around in. Now, sweatpants have become an acceptable article of clothing to wear anywhere these days. This is most likely due to the fact that we are all working from home. Sweatpants just seem like the best bet as they are soft, comfortable, and relaxed in this stay-at-home digital world of Zoom. As a result of the pandemic, social media influencers and celebrities are incorporating their sweatpants into classy looks for wear outside of the home. Pair them with a matching sweatshirt, a simple crop top, and a pair of combat boots for an edgy look, heels to dress them up, or sneakers for that classic sporty look.

The style of sweatpants has truly changed from clothing pieces we wore while lounging at home eating a bowl of popcorn. They've become a pair of comfy pants we confidently wear while strutting down the streets of Toronto and New York. Not to mention, our beloved style icon Hailey Bieber is unquestionably the leader of 2021's street style trends, as she paired her sweatsuits with long trench coats. Never before did we think that pairing a classy coat with baggy, slouchy loungewear would ever work, but Hailey proved us wrong.

Also, for the first time ever, 2021 saw luxury fashion brands presenting upscale sweatsuit combos and sweatpants paired with opulent pieces. So does this mean when we go back to work, employers everywhere will make Fridays Sweatpant Day? Probably not, but now you can go out and run your errands without the worry of people thinking that you are wearing sweats because you're lazy. Therefore, it is my honor to let you know that sweatpants are trendy. Go dominate the world in comfort!
